EMD model F2

The F2's had small number boards like the FT's, Mars signal lights mounted in the nose door, with the headlight above at the top of the nose; three portholes instead of the four on an FT; twin rectangular grid openings in the roof for dynamic brakes instead of the boxy resistors straddling the stacks of the FT's; four shrouded cooling fans; and "chicken wire" covering the radiator shutters.
Bernard Corbin captured FT-2 at Pacific Junction, IA, on Aug 13, 1961. The B-unit is from another consist as 150B had already been traded.

These were the final Q F-units delivered with the "freight-style' pilot, which curved inward below the anti-climber before sloping down to track level. F2's were delivered with door-mounted headlights that were slightly smaller than those which were retrofitted on FT's or F3's.
The F2-A/FT-B/FT-A sets were originally semi-permanently coupled into 4050 horsepower locomotives for use where a full four-unit set was unneeded. Why the F2's were "A's" in the first five sets and "C's" in the other five remains open to speculation.

Footnotes
2. FT number series 100 through 104 were broken up and renumbered in 1946 and combined with these 10 F-2's to produce FT-2 series 150 through 159. The FT series 100, for example, became FT-2 150, using an F2 (later renumbered 150A) and FT 100 (using the "A" and "B" units), and FT-2 151, using an F-2 and FT 100 ("C" and "D"), and so on.
